Getting Started

Is BG3 worth buying in 2026?

Absolutely. BG3 won Game of the Year (2023) and remains one of the highest-rated RPGs ever made. With no DLC planned, the game you buy is the complete experience.

What platform should I play on?

PC is the definitive experience (mouse + keyboard UI is superior for inventory management). Console versions (PS5, Xbox Series X|S) are excellent ports with controller-optimized UI.

Do I need to know Dungeons & Dragons rules?

No. BG3 teaches you everything through tooltips, tutorials, and combat logs. Knowing D&D helps you understand the math faster, but it’s absolutely not required.

Is the game too hard for beginners?

On Explorer difficulty, no. Explorer gives you +100% HP, easier enemies, and more forgiving mechanics. You can change difficulty at any time.

How long to beat?

  • Main story only: 50-60 hours
  • Main + major side content: 80-100 hours
  • Completionist: 150+ hours

Gameplay Questions

Can I respec my character?

Yes. Withers (camp NPC found in Dank Crypt) offers complete respec for 100 gold. You can respec unlimited times.

Can I respec companions?

Yes. Talk to Withers while controlling a companion. You can change their class, subclass, ability scores, and spells. Their personal story remains unchanged.

What happens when a companion dies?

Use a Scroll of Revivify (abundant in loot) or talk to Withers at camp (200g resurrection). Companions can also be revived at their corpse using a scroll during combat.

Can I miss companions permanently?

Yes. Companions can die permanently in story events (not combat), leave due to low approval, or leave due to major story decisions (raiding the grove causes Wyll, Karlach, and potentially Gale to leave).

Is there a stash/bank?

Yes. Your camp chest (next to your bedroll at camp) has infinite storage. Right-click → Send to Camp to store items remotely.

How does multiclassing work?

When you level up, you can choose to take a level in a different class instead of your current one. This is advanced and not recommended for beginners. Pure single-class builds are stronger than poorly planned multiclasses.

Is there new game plus?

No official NG+. However, mods exist. You keep nothing between playthroughs.

Technical Questions

Does BG3 support mods on console?

Yes, BG3 has official mod support on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Mac via the in-game Mod Manager (main menu). Mods are curated and approved by Larian.

Is there crossplay?

Yes. Crossplay between PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Mac was added in Patch 8. Cross-save is also supported via Larian account.

Can my PC run BG3?

Minimum requirements are modest (GTX 970 / RX 480, 8GB RAM, SSD required). Most gaming PCs from the last 8 years can run it. The SSD is mandatory — do not install on a hard drive.

Story & World

How much choice actually matters?

Enormously. Entire questlines, companion fates, major story branches, and ending variations change based on your decisions. The game has approximately 17,000 ending permutations.

Can you be evil?

Yes. The game fully supports an evil playthrough. You can side with the goblins, betray companions, and make genuinely dark choices. The story adapts accordingly.

Are there missable quests?

Yes. Many quests are time-sensitive or gated behind decisions. Examples: the Grove/Goblin conflict resolves one way or another, Nere dies if you long rest too many times in Grymforge, and companions leave if you make certain story choices.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is BG3 connected to Baldur's Gate 1 and 2?

How many endings does BG3 have?

Is there DLC or an expansion planned?

No. Larian Studios has confirmed no DLC or expansions for BG3. The game is complete as-is. Larian has moved on to new projects.
