BG3 Boss Guide: How to Beat Every Major Boss — Beginner Strategies
Complete BG3 boss guide for new players. Strategies for every major boss fight — Commander Zhalk, Phase Spider Matriarch, Auntie Ethel, Grym, Ketheric Thorm, Raphael, and the Netherbrain.
Act 1 Bosses
Commander Zhalk (Nautiloid Tutorial)
Level: 1 HP: 150 Strategy: Don’t try to kill him. Your goal is to reach the transponder at the front of the helm. However, if you want his Everburn Blade, have Shadowheart cast Command: Drop before activating the transponder. The mind flayer ally tanks Zhalk. Grab the sword and run.
Phase Spider Matriarch (Whispering Depths)
Level: 4 HP: 125 Strategy: The matriarch spawns on web bridges. Burn the webs. When she’s standing on a web bridge, use Fire Bolt or Alchemist’s Fire to destroy it. She falls, takes 30-50 fall damage, and goes prone (Advantage on melee attacks). Repeat. Kill phase spiderlings first — they’re fragile but deal poison damage.
Auntie Ethel (Teahouse / Lair)
Level: 5 HP: 145 (including clones) Strategy: Ethel creates multiple illusory clones. The real one has higher AC and different dialogue. Use Magic Missile — it auto-hits and one missile per clone dispels them. Bring Protection from Evil and Good. In her lair, avoid the cage with Mayrina — push Ethel away from her.
Act 2 Bosses
Yurgir (Gauntlet of Shar)
Level: 7 HP: 145 Strategy: Don’t fight him head-on. Persuade him (DC 21) that his contract has a loophole. He’ll kill his minions + displacer beast + himself. Free XP and loot with zero combat.
Ketheric Thorm (Moonrise Towers → Mind Flayer Colony)
Level: 8-9 HP: 210 (human) + 240 (Myrkul avatar) Strategy: Covered in detail in our Act 2 walkthrough. Key points:
- Phase 1 (rooftop): Burst him down, ignore adds
- Phase 2 (Myrkul): Free Dame Aylin ASAP. Blind the avatar. Stay off bone chill platforms.
- Bring Radiant damage (Spirit Guardians, Divine Smite, Guiding Bolt)
Act 3 Bosses
Orin the Red (Bhaal Temple)
Level: 11-12 HP: 210 Strategy: Orin has Unstoppable (10 stacks, blocks all damage). Remove stacks with multi-hit attacks (Magic Missile, Scorching Ray, Eldritch Blast, Fighter multi-attack). After stacks are gone, burst her. Kill the Bhaal cultists chanting in the corners — they restore her Unstoppable stacks. Protect your kidnapped companion.
Raphael (House of Hope)
Level: 12 HP: 666 Strategy: The hardest fight in the game.
- Destroy the 4 Soul Pillars first — they make Raphael invulnerable. Use Force damage (Eldritch Blast).
- Hold Monster on Raphael (he has +0 WIS save). Paralyzed = auto-crit melee hits.
- Globe of Invulnerability — stand inside, immune to all damage for 3 turns.
- Hope (ally) has Divine Intervention. Use it for massive radiant damage.
- Bring smokepowder barrels from the Iron Throne. Stack them around Raphael before the fight starts (dialogue pauses the game).
Netherbrain (Final Boss)
Level: 12 (max) HP: 350 Strategy: This is a timed fight — you have 5 turns before the Netherbrain unleashes its ultimate attack. Platform phase: your entire party climbs/brain hops to the Crown of Karsus. A mind flayer ally (Orpheus, Karlach, or you) channels the Netherstones. Portal phase: enter the Netherbrain’s psyche. Inside, burst it down. Use all your saved scrolls, potions, and one-time abilities. This is the last fight — there’s nothing to save resources for.
Pre-fight preparation:
- Summon ALL allies you’ve gathered (Call Forth Allies action)
- Drink Elixirs of Universal Resistance
- Cast Heroes’ Feast, Longstrider, Death Ward on everyone
- Speed potions for every character (extra action = 3 turns of double actions)
- Disintegrate scrolls deal massive force damage (Netherbrain has no force resistance)
