Step-by-Step: Every Screen Explained

Screen 1: Origin

Pick “Custom” (not an Origin character). Origin characters are better experienced as companions in your first playthrough.

Screen 2: Race

Your race determines appearance, racial features, and dialogue tags.

Beginner-friendly races:

  • Half-Elf (Wood) — 10.5m movement, darkvision, shield proficiency. The safest all-rounder.
  • Human — +1 to all abilities, extra skill. Simple but effective.
  • Dwarf (Gold) — +1 HP per level. The most forgiving race for mistakes.
  • Half-Orc — Drop to 1 HP instead of 0 once per long rest. Relentless Endurance saves you from death.
💡 Tip: Pick a race with Darkvision. Approximately 70% of BG3’s combat areas are dimly lit or dark. Characters without darkvision have Disadvantage on attacks in darkness. Half-Elf, Dwarf, Elf, Tiefling, and Gnome all have it.

Screen 3: Subrace

Only relevant for some races. Pick whatever has features you like.

Screen 4: Class

This is your most important choice. See our Best Class for Beginners guide for detailed tier rankings. Quick picks:

  • Easiest: Fighter
  • Melee + magic hybrid: Paladin
  • Healer: Cleric (Life Domain)
  • Ranged damage: Ranger

Screen 5: Ability Scores

The single most important screen. Your ability scores affect every roll in the game.

AbilityWhat It DoesRecommended Minimum
STRMelee damage, carrying capacity, shoving16-17 for melee, 8 for casters
DEXRanged damage, AC (if no heavy armor), initiative14 for medium armor, 10-12 for heavy
CONHit points. Never dump.14 minimum on everyone
INTWizards only8-10 for non-wizards
WISPerception, saving throws vs mind control10-12 minimum
CHADialogue, trading prices16-17 for face characters, 8-10 otherwise

The golden rule: Your primary stat (STR for Fighter, DEX for Ranger, WIS for Cleric, CHA for Paladin) should start at 17 (15+2 from race bonus). At level 4, take +2 to reach 19. At level 8, another +2 to reach 20.

Screen 6: Background

Provides two skill proficiencies and inspiration goals.

  • Soldier — Athletics + Intimidation. Best for Fighters/Barbarians.
  • Acolyte — Insight + Religion. Best for Clerics.
  • Folk Hero — Animal Handling + Survival. Good all-rounder.
  • Criminal — Deception + Stealth. Best for Rogues.
  • Charlatan — Deception + Sleight of Hand. Good for Bards/Warlocks.

Screen 7: Skills

Class-gated. For a beginner Fighter, pick Athletics and Perception. For any class, Perception is the most-used skill in the game (spotting traps, hidden doors, treasure).

Screen 8: Appearance

Go wild. You can change appearance later at the Magic Mirror in camp.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I play a custom character or an Origin character?

Play a custom character for your first playthrough. Origin characters (Shadowheart, Astarion, Gale, etc.) have fixed backstories and personalities that are better experienced by meeting them as companions. You can play as them on a second playthrough.

Does race matter in BG3?

Less than in tabletop D&D. In BG3, racial ability bonuses are flexible — you can assign your +2 and +1 to any stats regardless of race. Racial features still matter (darkvision, resistances, cantrips), but no race is 'bad' for any class.
