S-Tier Feats — Game-Changing
| Feat | Best For | Why It’s S-Tier |
|---|---|---|
| Alert | Everyone | +5 initiative. Going first in every fight is a free turn. Cannot be Surprised. |
| Great Weapon Master | STR melee | -5 to hit, +10 damage toggle. With Advantage (easy to get), the math is massively in your favor. Bonus Action attack on kill or crit. |
| Sharpshooter | DEX ranged | Same as GWM but for ranged weapons. Combine with Archery fighting style (+2 hit) and high ground (+2 hit) to offset the penalty. |
| Tavern Brawler | STR monks, throwing builds | Double STR mod to unarmed and thrown attack rolls AND damage. A TB Monk with 20 STR gets +10 to hit and +10 damage. |
A-Tier Feats — Strong & Reliable
| Feat | Best For | Why |
|---|---|---|
| War Caster | Clerics, Paladins, any caster | Advantage on concentration saves. Cast Shocking Grasp as a reaction. Essential for Spirit Guardians Clerics. |
| Ability Score Improvement | Everyone at level 4 | +2 to primary stat = +1 to hit, damage, skill checks, and saves. The boring but correct choice. |
| Dual Wielder | Dual-wield builds | +1 AC while dual-wielding. Use non-light weapons in both hands. |
| Savage Attacker | Paladins, melee damage | Reroll weapon damage dice and take the higher. Works on Smite dice. ~30% damage increase for Paladins. |
| Sentinel | Tanks, melee | Opportunity attacks stop enemy movement. Enemies attacking allies trigger your opportunity attack. |
B-Tier Feats — Situational
| Feat | When to Take |
|---|---|
| Polearm Master | Spear/glaive/halberd users. Bonus Action attack + opportunity attack on approach. |
| Crossbow Expert | Dual hand crossbow builds. No close-range penalty. Bonus Action attack. |
| Mobile | Monks, Rogues. +3m movement, difficult terrain immunity, free Disengage after attacking. |
| Moderately Armored | Wizards/Sorcerers dipping for medium armor + shield. |
| Heavily Armored | Clerics without heavy armor domain. |
| Resilient (CON) | Any caster. CON save proficiency for concentration. |
C-Tier Feats — Niche
| Feat | Why Niche |
|---|---|
| Mage Slayer | Only useful against casters. Most enemies are martial. |
| Magic Initiate | Versatile but a 1/day level 1 spell loses value. |
| Heavy Armor Master | -3 physical damage. Good in Act 1, falls off later. |
| Shield Master | +2 DEX saves is nice. Shove as Bonus Action is redundant with Shield Bash. |
| Defensive Duelist | +proficiency to AC as a reaction. Only for finesse weapon users. |
D-Tier Feats — Avoid
| Feat | Why Avoid |
|---|---|
| Actor | Double CHA proficiency for Deception/Performance. Too narrow. |
| Athlete | +1 STR/DEX and standing up costs less movement. Minor. |
| Charger | Action-costs your attack for a conditional shove. Weak. |
| Dungeon Delver | Advantage on trap perception + resistance to trap damage. Traps are already easy. |
| Durable | +1 CON and full heal on short rest. Redundant with abundant healing potions. |
| Elemental Adept | Ignore one element’s resistance. Only worthwhile for pure Fire/Lightning specialists. |
| Lucky | 3 luck points per long rest. Good in tabletop; in BG3, Inspiration points already exist. |
| Skilled | 3 skill proficiencies. You have companions for skills. |
| Tough | +2 HP per level. More HP is nice, but killing enemies faster (via offensive feats) prevents damage entirely. |

Frequently Asked Questions
Should I take a feat or ability score improvement?
For beginners, +2 to your primary stat (Strength for Fighter, DEX for Ranger, WIS for Cleric, CHA for Paladin) is almost always better than a feat at level 4. Having 18 in your primary stat makes everything more consistent. Take feats at levels 8 and 12 once your primary stat is 20.
What's the single best feat in BG3?
Alert. Going first in combat (+5 initiative) and immunity to Surprise means your entire party acts before enemies. This is effectively a free turn in every fight. For damage, Great Weapon Master and Sharpshooter are the most impactful.
